Never say the analog hole is dead - Just used Quicktime to screen record VLC playing a DVD of Dennis Potter's Pennies from Heaven because I can't find it ANYWHERE digital (especially with subtitles/captions).

@pluralistic - everything old is new again, right? Reminds me of the journey you outlined way back of live recording Audible content to backup your audio book library.

@TJJohn12 @pluralistic Hope this helps rather than annoys -- but check out Handbrake if you haven't already, it'll rip straight off DVDs, quickly and with less generational loss

@bobbyd0g @pluralistic -

No annoyance! I tried Handbrake - even tried to get it to work with libdvdcss - but it doesn't seem to be playing nice with my bargain basement USB DVD drive for hopping around the copy protection.

Moving to Mac from Windows has been an interesting journey - mostly good, frankly. But I REALLY miss good ol' DVD Decrypter.

@TJJohn12 @pluralistic Ah dang, I've never had a problem with that. My only USB drive is an LG and it does work. You might be able to just pull out the TS files and run them thru locally

@bobbyd0g - Mine is (and I'm not making this up) an "Amicool" DVD drive. 😃

I got what I paid for...

@TJJohn12 @bobbyd0g @pluralistic this might sound dumb, but have you tried unmounting the DVD? I have had trouble with some drives failing when the disc is automounted by some other library (e.g. the desktop manager) and libdvdread can't get raw access until the disc is unmounted.

@squish @bobbyd0g @pluralistic -

Likely the culprit and I'll play with this when I'm done with this bodge... but I'm in too deep, now. 😂

I'm liking the files this is yielding and that's what matters at the moment.
