Back when I was getting started with this thing last year, I made some mistakes that resulted in starting over after PeerTube had been running for a few days and picked up a few instance followers. Since then, those instances have never followed again, and I imagine they are still "following" us on their end but it may or may not be functioning. Anybody here familiar with how that works and what to do about it?

@monosynth Also, apparently, when I put a link in a post, the Mastodon iOS app doesn't know how to parse them and opens a browser :<

@monosynth It does make it more difficult to show things found on the network to people on this app. It's really unfortunate but the form does have a sort of natural tendency toward abuse for a user population coming from an environment twisted by opportunistic profit-driven algorithms…

@ariadne You did see Mastodon has a helm chart in the repo? I added the SSO support to it last year and updates have continued. It works pretty well besides my having needed to render it out and bring it up in pieces.

@ariadne I imagined Elon walking in the door and saying, "First thing's first: Never delete anything again" [to extent allowed by GDPR] and figured I'd wipe out any private accounts remaining before he showed up… Would wipe DMs on accounts I kept too, if I could.

@ariadne you know, one thing about suspension that becomes even more suspicious under adverse ownership is that when your account gets suspended, it becomes non-deletable and afaik is never deleted by Twitter. I haven't read all their small print, but I wonder if that effectively grants them license to use your data indefinitely. At least deactivating puts you in a ~30 day deletion hopper…

Now, even if you don't get 'em all at once with a Hellsite login, I'm sure y'all are going to get yourselves Matrix chat access somewhere or another, right? ;) Are you really gonna link Discord from your Mastodon feed? Or miss out on all the chats getting linked here?

(Oh god Matrix has problems help) Hop in, the water's fine! (Never try to join a matrix .org room oh god the ship is sinking as it grows)

@scanlime I was so confused seeing this for a moment but now I understand I must have completely miscommunicated my concept earlier, sorry. Not a crossposter, that's another story.

tech folks please resist the urge to create centrally automated blocklists

i know it is tempting to centralize the decentralized but that is extremely not what we are about in the fediverse

it's important that the sharing of information between instances happens between human admins who can make judgment calls about how authentic and relevant information is.

@ariadne Blowing my own trumpet a little here 🎺 but if you have a name.pn profile for sharing your name & pronouns it will automatically do this for you if you add your Mastodon profile to your onward links

you would like to "verify" yourself on the fediverse? great, no problem.

1. go to namecheap.com
2. register a domain, get their cpanel hosting or whatever.
3. put some website up on said domain, include something like <a href="[YOUR FEDIVERSE PROFILE LINK HERE]" rel="me">Follow me on the Fediverse!!!!!11111oneoneone.</a> in your HTML. the rel="me" is important.
4. link to your website in your fediverse profile.
5. the software will mark your relationship as verified, have a nice day

myself and a few others built this in 2018, seriously, we solved this problem years ago. it is how the internet works.

@ariadne I'm just working on this today, thank you -- does the role get unset or something?

How many of my followers are curious about standing up community Web services using Kubernetes, enough to watch a short video or ask questions in a livestream?

📣 It's time to boost your games & stuff!

Please make toots for your itch.io projects: include a direct itch.io link, some image/video, and mention @itchio so we can find your posts to boost!

@Cenizo It's nice to know that they'll never figure in to whether your community will see it or not!

@remmy Gratefully accepted :) Glad you're here to help make change!

So... this morning I had more notifications waiting for me in Mastodon than I did in Twitter. And all the notifications on Twitter are people telling me Mastodon will never get enough users to matter.

I tried to explain daylight savings time to my 4 year old and it was 1000x harder than explaining death or gender identity

It's funny, I don't know what to do with likes/faves on this platform. I feel compelled to do something different than on Twitter, but for me they merely served as read receipts and a way to remind my friends and critics ongoingly that I appreciate and care about their earnest engagement.

I guess it doesn't hurt anybody too much to continue that practice here. Counterpoints welcome! What is the point of faves?
