At once, it's already clear that instances attempting to serve ideologically "diverse" categories like "journalists" will quickly demonstrate that "a fascist at your dinner party makes it a fascist dinner party"

Sadly, without global search -- a pernicious feature that can enable all sorts of bad behavior -- Mastodon cannot offer the same ability to investigate claims and events for yourself that contributed to Twitter's most productive outcomes for independent journalism and widespread news literacy. I find myself passing along or discussing much less information I see here because I often have no way to see for myself what happened.

I guess much of my anxiety around the current shift to ActivityPub is that the network and the people necessarily aren't "ready" for each other, and technological flexibility is yet missing, so some of the potential mistakes can cause lost data -- namely, the universal need for the ability to switch instances. I don't want anybody to lose data or have a bad experience :\ I just need to spread my anarchistic view as broadly as possible to seed the ground for the revolution that belongs here.

@janusfox Part of why we need to diffuse the network as much as possible is to tamp down the corporate Internet's ability to police anything using legal threats. Anything they invest their effort into should affect only a tiny proportion of userbase and this would be quite deterrent. Right now, mastodon .social makes a very big target of itself. Any support you're willing to make of the big change is greatly appreciated!

@janusfox Not only for the technical improvement, but those threats will become obsolete as the network comes into its own socially, and people recognize it's up to us -- literally, US, not some amorphous concept of "society" (aka somebody else) -- to preserve our own history and communities and spaces. Many more of us must become admins to take closer responsibility for the communities around us, to whom we're accountable and in which we're personally invested.

@janusfox Oh -- you're on a new Mastodon instance! Unfortunately, there is no method for full data migration yet, and it won't be simple to implement. The maximal function we have available right now is to do a full archive download for your records, and to provide a structural redirect from the old profile on the old server to the new one. This issue is of great concern to me but I can't speak to its priority level in development at present.
