Twitter failing

Late to the party for my own story, but in case you missed it, here’s how one engineer within Twitter told me the platform is going to break. What do you think?
technologyreview.com/2022/11/0

One thing I can't stand about Twitter that I hope we can overcome here is the way everyone is trained to expect the worst possible interpretation of somebody's words, even when people intuitively understand the dramatic effect of context collapse on that platform. We can decide as a community to build the trust and responsibility it takes to be prepared for common ground and collaboration, and structure our systems accordingly

Sometimes I think we have overthought why people use/used social media. More than half the time, I just wanna pull down with my thumb and see something unexpected or interesting or that I want to respond to. For all its cultural importance, I think Twitter’s popularity (among a certain set of people) was mostly about being a really good place to swipe down your thumb. Aaannddd I kind of can’t believe how quickly Mastodon is serving that same purpose for me … and actually more interesting?

i think it doesn't help that some folks are using CW on absolutely all of their posts and using cheeky cryptic / joke descriptions, no offense but it's almost kind of a cognitive accessibility barrier

LRT: CWs, yes, absolutely; militant demand that everyone CW practically everything, no. i think those bounds, at least, are agreeable

doing more pervasive CWs might be more practical with tag-feed functionality, but right now my timeline here is kind of one long blurry mess

So here's what I've learned.
Mastodon isn't Twitter.
And that's by design.
You've grown used to things designed to give you that anger rush.
Mastodon is very deliberately built to avoid that.
The temptation is to replicate your Twitter experience.
Picking arguments, amplifying trolls.
Please don't.
This isn't your house, people here put time into building it.
Content warnings, ALT tags.
Don't turn it into a replica of the mess you just left.
If you miss the fights, the birdsite is still there.

Hellsite's Mastodon instance does not currently support search because when I stood this thing up, Elasticsearch was implicated in some major breach with an 0-day and I really wasn't having any part of that. There are some urgent issues I need to fix first, but I will be revisiting search soon.

#feditips I've seen a few people apologize for moving instances and I just want to say that that's not necessary! Mastodon servers aren't competing with each other for users or advertising dollars. Moving around to find a community or vibe that makes you comfortable is what this is all about. tech.lgbt in particular has had a fairly large number of former users leaving to start their own instances and I think that's awesome, actually

Back when I was getting started with this thing last year, I made some mistakes that resulted in starting over after PeerTube had been running for a few days and picked up a few instance followers. Since then, those instances have never followed again, and I imagine they are still "following" us on their end but it may or may not be functioning. Anybody here familiar with how that works and what to do about it?

Now, even if you don't get 'em all at once with a Hellsite login, I'm sure y'all are going to get yourselves Matrix chat access somewhere or another, right? ;) Are you really gonna link Discord from your Mastodon feed? Or miss out on all the chats getting linked here?

(Oh god Matrix has problems help) Hop in, the water's fine! (Never try to join a matrix .org room oh god the ship is sinking as it grows)

tech folks please resist the urge to create centrally automated blocklists

i know it is tempting to centralize the decentralized but that is extremely not what we are about in the fediverse

it's important that the sharing of information between instances happens between human admins who can make judgment calls about how authentic and relevant information is.

@ariadne Blowing my own trumpet a little here 🎺 but if you have a name.pn profile for sharing your name & pronouns it will automatically do this for you if you add your Mastodon profile to your onward links

you would like to "verify" yourself on the fediverse? great, no problem.

1. go to namecheap.com
2. register a domain, get their cpanel hosting or whatever.
3. put some website up on said domain, include something like <a href="[YOUR FEDIVERSE PROFILE LINK HERE]" rel="me">Follow me on the Fediverse!!!!!11111oneoneone.</a> in your HTML. the rel="me" is important.
4. link to your website in your fediverse profile.
5. the software will mark your relationship as verified, have a nice day

myself and a few others built this in 2018, seriously, we solved this problem years ago. it is how the internet works.

How many of my followers are curious about standing up community Web services using Kubernetes, enough to watch a short video or ask questions in a livestream?

📣 It's time to boost your games & stuff!

Please make toots for your itch.io projects: include a direct itch.io link, some image/video, and mention @itchio so we can find your posts to boost!

So... this morning I had more notifications waiting for me in Mastodon than I did in Twitter. And all the notifications on Twitter are people telling me Mastodon will never get enough users to matter.

I tried to explain daylight savings time to my 4 year old and it was 1000x harder than explaining death or gender identity
